Interlude

“Okay, Santa. Woo, I need a moment.”

“Sure, my child.”

Her heart pounds in her chest. She looks around the open and airy apartment she stands in. Complete silence surrounds her, but she can smell breakfast food in the kitchen.

“Where the hell am I now?”

“Is that the question you truly want to ask?”

She rolls her eyes and looks around the apartment once more. “Who was that dream supposed to be about?”

“You know very well who it was supposed to be about, my child.”

She feels the tickle of his laugh on her neck and she quickly turns around.

“How do you do that? Why can I hear you, but I can’t see you? How can I feel actions like a smile?”

“Christmas magic my dear. I’ll reveal myself as soon as you truly believe I exist and you aren’t losing your mind.”

“I’m talking to myself, inside my head, controlling my dreams, to a certain degree. I have to be losing it, sorry Old Saint Nick, this might land me in the cuckoo’s nest if I tell anyone about it.”

His rambunctious laugh makes her feel like when her father used to tickle her until she cried. She drops on the couch and holds her stomach, laughing.

“My child, the dream focused on that musician you always hoped to run into one day. Your brother used to tease you about him. Tell you if his best friend were that guy in reality and not just name, then he’d make sure you got what you wanted. So, I showed you what that might have been like.”

She catches her breath and straightens out her shirt. “Okay, but I still don’t understand, Santa. Make it make sense.”

“That I cannot do, but I assure you by the end of the fourth dream you will know.”

“You know … you like the mind games don’t you?”

“I like for people to understand what they were asking for when they made their wish to me. I’m gifting you something you already have. Now, let’s get on with the next one. I think you’ll really like it.”

Before she can say anything else, the body she’s in stands and walks into the kitchen. All she can do is internally sigh.
